Wetherby Prep incorporates adjoining listed building

Founded in 2004, the exclusive independent school for boys in London’s Marylebone has seen pupil numbers grow to 325 boys from year three to year eight and as a result, required additional space.

The listed building alongside their existing Bryanston Square location was the ideal solution when it became available. Offering a much needed 11,000 sq. feet of additional space, the structure required an extensive Cat A/Cat B refurbishment over a fifty-week duration. rpa:group’s Architectural division was appointed by City Axis to help deliver the scheme for The Alpha Plus Group.

Refurbishing a Grade 1 listed building understandably presented a unique set of challenges. Not only did the proposed works need to comply with stringent planning requirements applicable to buildings with listed status, but the structure was riddled with dry rot, which had to be addressed.

The works were undertaken in two phases, with phase one requiring the conversion of the basement into a dining room and kitchen. Phase two saw the upper floors developed into classrooms and ancillary rooms.

Works were successfully completed in time to welcome students back for the new school year.
