A former petrol station on the corner of Penry Street and Old Kent Road has been demolished to make way for the construction of 24 new homes and three retail units, which will be located at street level.
The new part 3, 4 and 5 storey building will also offer cycle parking at ground level, garden areas and a roof garden. Of the 24 new homes, thirteen will be allocated as council homes for social rent, and the remaining eleven will be private sale homes that will be prioritised for local people.
rpa:group has been appointed as Lead Architect, working with our client Glenman Corporation to provide RIBA Stages 4-6 on the scheme. A BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ is set to be achieved on the commercial units and sustainability is a focus for the entire building, with heat pumps and electricity being utilised, instead of gas. Design commenced in November 2021, with works starting on site in spring 2022 and an anticipated completion date of summer 2023.
The scheme is part of the council’s commitment to provide more quality council homes across the borough and to honour their commitment to providing 2,500 new council homes by May 2022. This is an ambitious but attainable effort to tackle the housing crisis and to ensure that residents have quality homes that they can be proud of, both now and in the future.
