A former petrol station on the corner of Penry Street and Old Kent Road was demolished to allow for the construction of 24 new homes and three retail units. rpa:group was appointed as Lead Architect, working with our client Glenman Corporation to provide RIBA Stages 4-6 on the scheme.
The new part 3, 4 and 5 storey building is helping towards the Council’s ambitious target to deliver or start construction on 2,500 new council homes by May 2022.
Of the 24 new homes, thirteen are allocated as council homes for social rent, and the remaining eleven are private sale homes, prioritised for local people. The recently completed building also offers cycle parking at ground level, as well as garden areas and a roof garden to enhance quality of life for residents.
A BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ was achieved on the commercial units and sustainability was a focus for the entire building, with heat pumps and electricity being utilised, instead of gas. This most recent build forms an important part of an ambitious but attainable effort to tackle the housing crisis in London and to help ensure that residents can have quality homes that they can be proud of, both now and in the future.
