Book lovers to benefit from Waterstones makeovers

rpa:group is helping Waterstones with the redevelopment of a number of their bookshops, in the UK and abroad. All are taking place in existing stores, with works including new shop fronts for some. Previous coffee concessions are undergoing refurbishment and rebranding, to become Café W areas instead.

Established in 1982, Waterstones is a different breed of bookshop that is known for its wide variety of literature and highly literate staff. Aside from the opportunity to browse the diverse selection of books, many stores also invite customers to linger longer at their in-store coffee shops, branded as “Café W”.

rpa:group is helping Waterstones with the redevelopment of a number of their bookshops, in the UK and abroad. All refurbishments are taking place in existing stores and will include new shop fronts for some, with all receiving new LED Lighting design and improved store layouts, as well as new fixtures and fittings and various maintenance procedures.

Some of these Waterstones have operated a coffee concession on the premises, which are undergoing refurbishment and rebranding, to become Cafe W areas instead. Externally, new signage will be implemented, that features a hanging gold “W” that is identifiable as part of the Waterstones brand evolution.

rpa:group was appointed in June to provide full Project Management services for the scheme. This includes site supervision, managing of contractors, client and landlord liaison, supervision of planning applications, programming and coordinating with CDM advisors.

With the exception of the café areas, in general, the works are being carried out while the stores remain open for trading. The entire project is expected to reach completion in the spring of 2020.
