Brunswick House – redundant office block gets student accommodation makeover

rpa:group’s architecture team has completed work on the £9 million Brunswick House development in Southampton for client Empiric Student Property plc.

rpa:group carried out the detailed design packages for the project, working closely with the supply chain enabling the scheme to commence on site two weeks after appointment. The scheme, to build state of the art accommodation for 156 students, involved stripping a 1960’s tower block back to its structure, re-cladding and extending the podium by one floor and adding a new three metre extension at the rear.

rpa:group implemented the original scheme, with planning consent for 156 bedrooms, comprising individual studios and one, two and three bedroom apartment configurations, while at the same time redesigning and achieving a new planning consent for a 173 bedroom scheme. The property, with rents ranging between £148 and £200 per week offers a range of incredible facilities for an exceptional student experience.
An onsite private gym, work-rooms, games room, in house cinema, and on site laundry are available to all student residents. There is also high speed broadband and Wi-Fi fitted throughout, secure electronic access, on site management, a concierge team, a 24 hour helpline and CCTV.

Brunswick House is in a prime location with Southampton Solent University campus situated approximately 350 metres to the south-east and the University of Southampton’s main campus situated 1.8 miles to the north. The new development opened with full occupancy.
